Opening of the first
humanitarian WASH Master in Amman

The first humanitarian WaSH Master in the Middle East opened this week in Amman, Jordan. Conceived in partnership with ACF and GJU, this Master is the result of a 2-years process. Gilles Collard, Bioforce’s Managing Director, has expressed his satisfaction and his best wishes to the students who followed the ceremony online.

“The needs in the middle east are huge and next December you’ll be well prepared to face these challenges. You will learn a lot as 60% of the courses are practical exercises. Take benefit of all these moments”. A representative from GJU emphasized “I already know that in the next five years you’ll all become leaders in the humanitarian sector, particularly in the WASH field”.

Suffering from long-standing conflicts, chronic water shortages and the consequences of climate change, the Middle East faces immense humanitarian needs, especially regarding water, sanitation and hygiene. These requirements are seen as one of the main priorities for most countries in the region. In Syria and Yemen, over 30 million people have been affected this year, as much of the local infrastructure has been damaged.

Making training programmes accessible in this region of the world is therefore a critically important issue. In order to address these needs, the German-Jordanian University, Action Against Hunger, a leading international NGO in this field, and Bioforce are launching the first humanitarian master’s in water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) in the Middle East. From next September, the future WaSH managers in these areas devastated by several years of conflict will contribute to the development of the operational capacity of humanitarian organications.

Deployed in Jordan since 2018 to conduct the entire consultation, preparation and implementation phase of the Master’s degree at the request of Action Against Hunger, Bioforce thus contributes to the creation of a regional pool of future collaborators for humanitarian organizations. Empowering WaSH humanitarian practitioners in the Middle East is a major leap that will help meet the challenges of the demand for water, sanitation and hygiene in the region and save more lives.
